John
Strain is Certified as a Specialist in Taxation Law by the California Board
of Legal Specialization. He is a member of the California Bar and is admitted
to practice before the California Courts, the United States District Court
for the Central District of California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals,
the Court of Federal Claims, the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, the U.S.
Tax Court, and the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Strain was raised in Long Beach and Orange County, California and now resides in Manhattan Beach, California. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Claremont McKenna College in 1971 (summa cum laude) and a Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago in 1974 (cum laude). At the University of Chicago, he was an Associate Editor of the Law Review and was admitted to the Order of the Coif honor society. He founded our firm in January of 1980.
Mr. Strain has experience in a variety of business-oriented tax matters. A substantial amount of this experience relates to foreign businesses with U.S. operations and investments and to U.S. persons with foreign business and investment endeavors. Because pension plans raise complicated tax issues for businesses, Mr. Strain also has substantial experience regarding the technical aspects of such plans as regulated by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (commonly called “ERISA”).
